Is it worth the risk of getting your website banned from Google in an effort to boost your search engine rankings through methods which may violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines?
The answer? It depends on your long term goals.
If you're not on page 1 of Google for key search terms related to your niche then no one will find you via Google search anyway, so from that point of view it's probably worth the risk.
However, if you value your website's longer term prospects, if the URL is valuable from a resale perspective or the site is your flagship brand site then it's probably not worth the risk as being sandboxed or removed completely from the SERPS could be catastrophic to your longer term strategy.
One solution is to build buffer sites with throwaway domains which mirror your main website without being a direct clone (ie. no duplicate content) then use whatever tactics you deem necessary to rank that site. If your efforts amount to nothing, or worse your sites get removed from the SERPS, it's not going to affect your brand website and you can start again with another domain.
I personally launch around 5 related sites at the same time all with different SEO strategies and see what sticks. Whatever works is rolled out to future sites.
That way it doesn't really matter what Google may roll out in future Penguin/Panda updates as your money site will always remain insulated while you can 'make hay while the sun shines' with your other sites.
It is still important to create quality content for your other sites as thin, keyword stuffed affiliate sites will not rank no matter what you do. Always build sites from the perspective of what a real person would like to see, so build them for humans, not searchbots.
Don't overuse your main keywords, use synonyms as well and only use them in context. Think about how you would naturally talk to someone about your product or niche without sounding artificial or too 'salesy'.
Use images and video content on your web pages and encourage people to share that content socially via Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
